Why Have Politics Become Religious?

Religion has no place in politics, at least that was the opinion Jesus had on it, and well Jesus is always right. It has been bothering me a lot lately that in a country with freedom of religion, religion (look how I say religion specifically and not Jesus) has made its way greatly into politics. By politics, yes I mean the parties and the president but its even involved in smaller things like our Pledge of Allegiance and our money, things we don’t have say over.

Anyone who knows me knows that I am very political. I know who and when I can talk about it with, but when it comes down to it, I have very strong political opinions. My opinions stem from Matthew 22:36-39: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.”

I’ve never understood why Christians are stereotypically Republicans. Typically republicans are anti LGBTQ+ rights as well as anti-abortion which sadly most Christians are. The previous statement does not symbolize that I am pro-abortion because Im not, I just beleive that the option should be there for pregnancies where if the pregnancy is continued it could harm mother or baby or if a woman was raped and choses that she can not carry the child to term due to the effects it may have on her health mentally and physically. Regardless of that, I do not understand why Christians typically support the GOP because the party favors businesses over people.

Republican Party and Democratic Party flags on scales

Jesus did not care about money or corporations, he cared about people. When you look at the platforms of the two major parties in America, one statistically cares much more about the individual needs of Americans. That’s why I’ve always leaned more “liberally” as people would say, because its about the people! So before anyone jumps down my throat about my beliefs and why I think its crazy that people associate Christians and the Republican party, let me explain…

Like I said earlier, my opinion stems from Matthew 22:34-39. I talk about this a lot, love your neighbor as yourself. Voting and politics is the way that we have an impact on our country as a whole, so why would we vote for a party or even specific bills that don’t favor allowing people to live the life they wish? If you as a white, heterosexual, middle class Christian have the right to live your life the way you please, then why shouldn’t someone who may not fall under one of those privileged categories not get to experience the same freedom. We cannot say that we love our neighbor as ourselves if we don’t give them the same freedoms that we have, even if we don’t agree with what that freedom may be. They should still have the right to be happy because God gave us free will. We can’t take that free will away from people just because we don’t agree with them.

Ultimately my opinion is simple: the Bible may say that something is against the will of God, gay marriage for example, but that does not mean that in a country based on freedom and as a species with free will, that we should take that ability away from anyone. If you have the freedom to do something, everyone should have the freedom to do it because otherwise, we as a nation are showing love to only some people and not everyone. That’s not what Jesus asked us to do. So I will leave you with this…

How do your political opinions reflect the way Jesus asks us to treat other people?
