Who we identify as is so important to us as humans, whether we want to admit it or not. When someone asks who I am, I identify as a believer, as a daughter, as a social worker, as a writer, as a friend. What are the identity labels you put on yourself? In reality, the only identity we need is our identity in Christ.

Why is it that we put so much emphasis on identity? We as humans have a natural desire to belong. We feel connected to people who identify the same way we do; whether that be in political opinion, religion, gender, sexual orientation, etc. We feel comfortable with people who have similar identities because we have a connection with them. But we put so much weight on these identities and how they appear to other people, that we forget what our one identity should be: our identity as believers.

Not only do we identify with being things, but we also identify with situations because when other people are feeling the same way you are, you feel connected. All of these different identities give you a sense of belonging. It is acceptable to have an identity as specific things because they are part of who you are. For example: being a mom is an identity that impacts who you are as a person. It is a way that women feel like they belong with other women, they feel connected.

The importance of identity is we need to remember the purpose. Christ gives us this ability to connect with other people through these identities as a way to love everyone. Because once again, your identity in Christ is the most important identity you can ever hold.
